Mulga Maps

outback to ocean

Maps that work where the signal doesn't.

Import your own georeferenced maps, record points, tracks and shapes with your GPS, and take it all offline. Built in Western Australia as a replacement for Avenza Maps.

What it does

Your maps, offline, with your data on them.

Mulga Maps opens your georeferenced PDFs, GeoTIFFs and images, puts you on the map, and lets you collect data against it. It runs fully offline and needs no login.

Works offline, properly

Maps, points, tracks and shapes all live on your device. Nothing waits on a connection, and background tracking keeps recording with the screen off.

Unlimited map imports

Georeferenced PDF, GeoTIFF, JPG with world files, MBTiles, PMTiles and shapefiles. Multi-page PDFs open as one map, and adjacent maps open as you move between them.

Georeference your own

Turn a plain PDF, scan or photo into a map with control points, a choice of fit, and an RMS readout. Export it back out as a georeferenced PDF.

Free

Collect data at every feature

Points, tracks and shapes each carry custom fields, notes, geotagged photos, colour and a recorded date and time. Build an attribute schema once and reuse it.

Your GPS, at full accuracy

Connect an external GNSS receiver directly, with no mock location workaround. Positions arrive at the receiver's native precision, from metres to centimetres, including Trimble receivers through Trimble Mobile Manager.

Pro

Draw, measure, navigate

Draw lines and areas, record GPS tracks, follow a saved track with turn cues and off-track alerts, and get geofence alerts when you enter or leave an area.

Maps from anywhere

Add maps from cloud storage, a web server or a QR code. Share any map to Mulga Maps from another app and it lands in the right place.

Export to your GIS

Export to GPX, KML and KMZ, GeoJSON, GeoPackage and shapefile. Group features and export them together. Back up everything, or just maps, points, tracks or shapes.

Built for survey work

Coordinates that say which datum.

Tap the position readout on the map to cycle formats. Every UTM grid names its datum: GDA2020 or GDA94, with WGS84 and MGRS alongside. Lock a format when you want it to stay put.

Example position near Meekatharra, Western Australia.

Go to a coordinate, show a grid overlay, average a point over time, and see which of your maps cover where you're standing.

About the name

Mulga is the outback.

Mulga is the Australian outback, the sunscorched country where dusty roads end, signal drops out and reliable maps matter most.

The word comes from Gamilaraay (Kamilaroi), the language of the Gamilaraay people of north-central New South Wales and southern Queensland. Their word malga is recorded as meaning a shield, made from the hard, dense wood of the tree that in English we call mulga (Acacia aneura).

Mulga grows across vast areas of arid Australia, including much of Western Australia, where Mulga Maps was made. For thousands of years it has been central to life for many Aboriginal peoples. It provides food from its seeds and galls, and wood for shields, spears, boomerangs and digging sticks. Each language group knows it by its own name.

We chose the name because Mulga Maps is built for that country and the people who work and explore on it. We hope our users work on Country in close partnership with the Indigenous peoples to help care for the land.
